Terex trio lifts pedestrian bridge in Rotterdam
Rotterdam, October 30th, 2013 - "De Netkous", as the pedestrian and cyclists' bridge is known locally, crosses the A15 motorway and a railway line and now connects the south of Rotterdam to a neighboring recreational area. This connection was made possible by Dutch crane service provider Wagenborg Nedlift with the help of three Terex® cranes. Two Terex AC 500-1 all terrain cranes and a Terex CC 2500-1 crawler crane worked together in a carefully planned lift to place the almost 200 meter-long bridge in to position.
"We opted to use the three Terex cranes on this project because they had precisely the capacities we needed to complete the two required lifts safely and reliably within the given time frame," explains Project Manager Jack Bienen of Wagenborg Nedlift, who was responsible for transporting and lifting the bridge. The architecturally striking, latticed tubular bridge –'Netkous' actually means 'fishnet stocking' – was transported to the site in two sections by self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). The larger section was 100 meters in length and weighed 350 tonnes; the second, slightly smaller section measured 90 meters in length and weighed 325 tonnes. As the motorway and the railway line had to be completely closed for the lift, the Wagenborg Nedlift team was allowed only two days to install the bridge.
Setting up the cranes - a quick procedure
The assembly-friendly design of the Terex cranes was a great help for the team when it came to setting them up. Wagenborg’s team drove the two AC 500-1 all terrain cranes to the site, each accompanied by three transport vehicles. The set up was quick, and within an hour the two AC 500-1 cranes were ready for work. Each had a 28.6 meter long main boom, 160 tonnes of counterweight and a 9.6 meter outrigger base. "We only needed two team members for this work," reports Jack Bienen. The company used 29 trucks to transport the CC 2500-1 crawler crane. Four team members erected it in one day into its superlift configuration with a 48-meter main boom, 120 tonnes of counterweight and 250 tonnes of superlift counterweight.
The three Terex cranes were ready to lift both bridge sections up to the required height of around 20 meters to position them on their foundations. The CC 2500-1 crawler crane, equipped with a spreader, was positioned on one side of the construction sections and the two AC 500-1 all terrain cranes on the opposite side. The Terex trio hoisted the bridge sections, perfectly balanced, from the SPMTs in precisely coordinated lifts. "The CC 2500-1 operated at a working radius of 20 to 25 meters, which could be varied by adjusting the main boom. The work radius of the AC 500-1 was 16 meters," explains Jack Bienen. The operator of the CC 2500-1 crawler crane, Marcel Broeders, was faced with a particular challenge when executing the two lifts. Not only did he lift the sections and rotate them into position, but he also had to crawl under full load. With careful planning and flawless execution, man and machine mastered this task with ease. The result? The bridge was erected within the tight timeframe and the motorway and railway line could be re-opened again on schedule. "We expected nothing else," concludes Jack Bienen.
About the Terex® CC 2500-1 lattice boom crawler crane
The Terex® CC 2500-1 is the most powerful lattice boom crawler crane in its class. It has a maximum lifting capacity of 500 tonnes, maximum load moment up to 6140 metre tonnes, and a maximum load radius of 146 metres with SSL/LSL 126 m + 36 m LF configuration. The CC 2500-1 crane stands out by virtue of its enormous load capacity and great flexibility, especially in superlift configuration. Variable superlift radius and variable offset for SW and SWSL boom combinations allow operation in an extended range of applications. Main boom length can be up to 126 metres, dependent on the model selected. By design, the crane’s weight is optimised for transport, at a maximum of 39 tonnes per section. The user-friendly IC-1 touchscreen crane control system is designed for simple and safe operation, for example it can calculate load capacities for intermediate main boom positions.
About the Terex® AC 500-1 all terrain crane
With a carrier just 17.1 m (56 ft) long, the eight-axle Terex® AC 500-1 all terrain crane features an extremely compact design. Employing its telescopic main boom, the AC 500-1 achieves a maximum working height of 56 meters (183.7 ft). By using a luffing fly jib, the maximum working height can be extended to 145.8 meters (478 ft). The sideways superlift allows for enormous lifting power across the full capacity range. The star-shaped outrigger layout helps to ensure the required stability. Short setup times and the control system's ease of use make for safe crane operations and comfortable working conditions.
