TEREX® CC 5800 & 2800-1 ERECT ASIA’S LARGEST RADIO TELESCOPE

Shanghai, China, June 22nd,2012 - Two Terex® lattice boom crawler cranes, one Terex CC 5800 and one Terex CC 2800-1 were used in a tandem lift to install the back frame of the 65 meter diameter reflector for the antenna of what will be Asia’s largest radio telescope. This was the second lift performed by the cranes after lifting and positioning the pitching mechanism on March 17.

Performed by Tianjin Launch Specific Hoisting Equipment Engineering Co. Ltd (Tianjin Launch), the lift of the 320 tonne, 65 meter wide and 11 meter high back frame was a challenging one, due to the large cross section of the piece and a low wind speed tolerance that was enforced by Tianjin Launch. Also, due to Shanghai weather characteristics, the lift had to take place before 10 am. As after this time, winds pick up and make lifts too dangerous.

The lift started on the 17th of April at 6:30 am. The cranes lifted the load to a height of 39 meters and slowly began to crawl to the required location. “This lift was particularly challenging because the back frame features a large diameter and heavy weight, so a larger operation radius was needed. Additionally, the project is highly sensitive and precise, so we had to work with much smaller tolerance margins. For these reasons, we chose the reliable and proven design of the Terex CC 2800-1 and CC 5800,” comments Zhang Yongliang, Deputy General Manager and Chief Engineer of Tianjin Launch.

The CC 5800 was used in a SWSL54 + 36m configuration, and the CC 2800-1 in a HSWSL54 + 36m configuration. A custom spreader with a bias hook position was also used which allowed the higher capacity CC 5800 to take more weight. “In tandem lifts, it is of vital importance to monitor the load of each crane while performing the lift. So, for this sensitive project we relied on the accurate load moment readings of the IC1 Load Moment Indicators, redundancy LMIs was a feature requested by our customer,” adds Zhang.

After lifting the load to 39 meters, the two cranes slowly crawled for 1 hour and 35 minutes to position the load above the specified location. At 9:10 am, the back frame was carefully positioned and attached to the supporting structure. The entire process took under 4 hours and within the specified time frame.

This radio telescope system is a major cooperation project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Municipality and will be operated by the Shanghai Observatory. It features a main reflector with a diameter of 65 meters, a height of 70 meters and a weight of about 2600 tons. The main reflector has an area equivalent to 8 basketball courts. In 2013, the radio telescope system will be used for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) orbit testing, part of the Phase II Lunar Exploration Project.

Having past experience in this field with installing the 50m diameter antenna of the Beijing Miyun Observatory with a Terex CC 2800-1, Zhang adds, “Tianjin Launch was chosen for this complex project because of our past experience involving delicate lifts. We have built our reputation based on careful planning, close cooperation with our customers and flawless execution. For all large lifts, we have relied only on Terex cranes. We even started with a CC 1400.”

About The Terex® CC 5800

The 1,000-tonne Terex CC 5800 lattice boom crawler crane, featuring a maximum load moment of 12,680 mt, is designed for industrial operations worldwide. Its components, which have been dimensioned for a maximum transportation width of 3m and feature low transportation weights ranging from 15 to 50 tonnes, allow for worldwide, cost-effective transportation. The unit’s strengths can be seen at their very best when building petrochemical plants and power plant facilities or erecting large wind turbines. A simple assembly process allows for short setup times, a main boom variable offset for SW and SWSL configurations, and both a Quadro drive and hydraulically-assisted boom section pinning are standard features for the CC 5800. In addition, the variable Superlift attachment, with an adjustable radius of 15–24 m, increases the crane's stability and maneuverability at construction sites while also enabling it to work when space is tight. The crane is also equipped with redundant drive units, resulting in increased reliability at the site: if one of the two drive units fails, the other one takes its place immediately. Finally, if the power supplied by both motors is not required, it is possible to save a considerable amount of fuel by simply using only one of them.

About The Terex® CC2800-1

The Terex® CC 2800-1 lattice boom crawler crane can be converted from a standard crane to a special-purpose crane for wind-power applications, and back, with only a few components. These special components include extra-strong main boom connectors and a rigid luffing fly jib (LF2) with a length of 12 to 36 meters that was developed specifically for wind power-related applications. The available standard-based wind power configurations provide excellent lifting capacities and clearance while reducing transportation costs.

The undercarriage is available in two different models: the standard version and a narrow-track version, the latter allowing the crane to move through 5 meter-wide roads. The narrow track kit can be used with either 1.2 meter-wide track pads (for a smaller total width) or 1.5 meter-wide track pads (for reduced ground pressure). In addition, the crane can also be supplied with a chassis designed for road travel. The basic machine, including all winches and the A-frame, can be transported within a 12 tonne axle load limit.

The high level of flexibility provided by these options and features saves time and money during transportation, setup, and disassembly, providing for a high level of cost-effectiveness in the process. Moreover, the time-tested Terex IC1 control system, featuring remote radio control capabilities, makes it possible to operate the Terex® CC2800-1 easily, safely, and comfortably.
