THREE TEREX® FLAT TOP TOWER CRANES USED IN THE refurbishment OF MILAN’s PRESTIGIOUS Exelsior HOTEL GALLIA
Milan, Italy, August 2013 - The historic Excelsior Hotel Gallia is located at the Piazza Duca d’Aosta, opposite Milan’s Stazione Centrale. This sophisticated, elegant building has welcomed guests since 1932. The hotel has been undergoing radical refurbishment since 2010, involving three Terex® flat top tower cranes.
The renovation and extension of the Excelsior Hotel Gallia in Milan is part of a broader urban regeneration project for the square following the recent completion of modernization of the main station “Stazione Centrale”. A Qatar-based international investment fund (Katara Hospitality) acquired the hotel’s 1930s building and added an extension with the intention of upgrading it to a luxury five-star hotel. The purchase also comprised another three buildings in a poor state of disrepair, located between Via Filzi, Via Galvani, Piazza Duca D’Aosta, and Piazza IV Novembre.
Following an international selection process, Studio Marco Piva was awarded the architectural and landscaping contract, while the renovation works are carried out by ZH General Construction Company AG. The work began in 2010 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2013, and involves a built area of 30,840 m2 for a building volume of 126,975 m3.
As requested, and in agreement with the municipal authorities, the new building is designed to contrast with the historic building. Its architectural design intends to provide a link with surrounding modern architectures. Thanks to its screen-printed glass façade featuring an irregular “chiaroscuro” pattern, it aims to forge links with the façade textures of the Pirelli skyscraper, the more distant Torre Galfa and new buildings currently under construction in the Porta Nuova area.
Terex tower cranes in use
At this jobsite, Terex flat top tower cranes are in use for lifting and placing building materials (from plasterboard to bricks and fine marble), equipment, fittings, and installations used by all the firms working on this huge building site.
Three flat top tower cranes, a CTT 121 with 5 t maximum capacity and 55 m jib length and two CTT 181 with 8 t maximum capacity and 65 m jib length, are part of the fleet owned by ZH General Construction Company AG. Purchased recently from Terex Cranes in Fontanafredda (Pordenone), the cranes were transported directly to the site and mounted on a pedestal in just one day, with a second day for commissioning and programming. The whole process was supported by two Terex technicians and personnel from Bolzano-based ZH.
Severino Montesin, the ZH GCC/SPA Project Manager, explains: “The CTT 121 has successfully completed all its tasks and has been disassembled because it was installed in a service elevator shaft to support at the start of the project when the lifting requirements were most intense. The two CTT 181 cranes will finish work after the summer. We have a large fleet of Terex tower cranes, and knowing their durability, so we decided to purchase these three additional cranes to use also in other future projects. Terex also provided us with very good support during the planning and during the mounting, installation and commissioning phases of the cranes.”
“These models are fast to install and proved to be very effective thanks to their versatility. The working range limiter system provides a helpful tool, as the customer can determine the very limited operating area as given by the jobsite. The work is proceeding in time and without any problems. We expect to dismantle the remaining cranes at the end of September,” added Severino.
