Terex® cC 2500-1 CRAWLER CRANE LIFTS CONTAINER CRANE AT THE PORT OF Gustavsburg-Ginsheim
Gustavsburg, Germany, June 26th, 2013 – In December 2012, Mainz-based crane service provider RIGA MAINZ lifted a container crane at the Rhine Port in Gustavsburg. Due to cost considerations and tight space conditions at the wharf, RIGA MAINZ used the compact, yet powerful Terex® CC 2500-1 crawler crane for the lift.
During the past few months, the port container crane owned by logistics company Contargo has been through a lot. In September 2012, it was torn down at its original location at Mainz’s port of entry and taken to its new home in Gustavsburg port on a barge along the Rhine, where it was reassembled in December. The most impressive part of this crane is its 77.3 meter long girder/boom with a weight of approximately 150 tonnes. “When it came to lifting that component, our Terex CC 2500-1 proved to be particularly well-suited to the job for two reasons: One, its technical characteristics, as its powerful performance, its dimensions, and the required reach made it the perfect match for the conditions at the work site. Two, its cost-effectiveness,” explains RIGA MAINZ project manager Kathrin Marx.
The CC 2500-1’s design allows it to be transported with its winch and A-frame assembled, which reduced setup time and helped lower costs as a result. “I also think it’s important to mention that the assembly process for this Terex model is especially fast and easy, which meant that our team only needed two days to set up the crane and two days to tear it down,” comments Tim Langer, one of RIGA MAINZ’s crane operators. The CC 2500-1 already proved its worth by loading the container crane onto the barge, so that it was already clear it would be the perfect machine to reassemble it.
In order to assemble the container crane at the new location, RIGA MAINZ set up the crawler crane with an SL configuration and a boom length of 54 meters. The central ballast weighed 40 tonnes, the superstructure ballast weighed 160 tonnes, and the superlift ballast weighed 100 tonnes.
Positioning the Terex CC 2500-1 to assemble the container crane demanded a great deal of precision from operator Tim Langer. First, he had to lift the crane girder to a height of 20 meters, slew it at a radius of 16 meters towards the assembly spot, and finally crawl forward around 10 meters while under load. To prevent the component from swinging dangerously during the process, the crane service provider used an assist crane. Additional assist cranes were used as well in order to lift the container crane columns on which the girder would be mounted. This was a real challenge for the signaler. However, the signaler was able to coordinate all the cranes so well that the entire assembly process was completed, just as scheduled, in a mere two days.
The Terex® CC 2500-1
The Terex® CC 2500-1 is the most powerful lattice boom crawler crane of its class. It has a maximum lifting capacity of 500 tonnes, a maximum load moment of 6,140 mt, and a maximum load radius of 146 meters with a 126-meter SSL/LSL plus 36-meter LF configuration. When set up with a Superlift configuration, the CC 2500-1 truly stands out with its enormous lifting capacities and high level of versatility: The variable Superlift radius expands the crane’s potential applications, as does the variable offset achieved with SW and SWSL configurations. Depending on the actual configuration, the main boom can be as long as 126 meters. Machine weight is optimized for transport at a maximum of 39 tonnes per section. A user-friendly IC-1 crane controller with a touchscreen makes operating the crane both easy and safe, and can perform tasks such as calculating the lifting capacities for intermediate main boom positions.
