Vernazza Autogru receives Italy's first Terex® Challenger All Terrain Cranes

Italy, 15 November, 2012 – Vernazza Autogru S.r.l, a lifting and transport company based in Genoa, has recently acquired a Terex® Challenger 3160 and a Challenger 3180 All Terrain Crane with 55 and 60 tonnes of lifting capacity respectively. These were the first Challengers delivered to Italy. The cranes have been enthusiastically incorporated into Vernazza's fleet and have been painted with zebra and tiger stripes that make them stand out at job sites.

Behind the purchasing decision

“The choice for the Challenger 3160 and 3180 was based on the cranes' advanced features,” says Patrick Gianoncelli, marketing manager at Vernazza Autogru. "In these machines, we found compactness, manoeuvrability, precision and a very good ratio between size and performance. With these machines, Terex Cranes demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to crane design. They represent the best in their class.”

Vernazza's decision to go with Terex Cranes was also based on versatility. "As I said," continues Gianoncelli, "the cranes have a big operating flexibility, so they can be utilized in urban environments and in confined spaces. And thanks to their smooth movements, they can perform lifting operations where precision is a determining factor."

The Terex cranes are a significant addition to Vernazza's fleet of 150 pieces of equipment. "Our activity spans the whole country, so having the best type of equipment for a specific lifting operation, in addition to the very high skill level of our operators, marks our strength. The two Challenger cranes integrate very well into our fleet and serve to round out our range."

A unique paint job

The two Terex cranes won't go unnoticed on the job site either thanks to a high-impact paint job. As for the reason why Vernazza chose to give them a unique exterior, Gianonelli explains: "Years ago, we experimented with giraffe-inspired graphics and it was quite a success, so we wanted to repeat that with the Challenger 3160 painted to resemble a zebra and the 3180 like a tiger. Besides the visual effect that highlights the design of this machine, we're certain that the paint job has and will have a distinctive added value from a marketing standpoint because it gives Vernazza brand recognition."

First-time out

The Challenger 3160 was used with success for the handling of various sized boats inside the Genoa trade exhibition centre in preparation for the 52nd International Boat Show held in October 2012. The Challenger 3180 is currently in the painting phase.

About the Terex® Challenger 3160

The powerful and compact Terex Challenger 3160 is currently the only three-axle crane with a 55-tonne lifting capacity designed with one-person operation in mind. With a 50-m single-cylinder telescopic boom and a maximum lifting capacity of 35.6 tonnes when working with a reach of four meters, the Terex Challenger 3160 can be operated independently by a single person while remaining under an axle load limit of 12 tonnes (for countries with a maximum axle load limit of 10 tonnes, the crane can set down its own counterweight, keeping the unit’s total service weight under 30 tonnes).

About the Terex® Challenger 3180

With a 50-meter (164-ft) main boom combined with a 16-meter (52.5-ft) extension, the Challenger 3180 provides the longest system length in the 60-tonne (66.1 US-t) all terrain capacity class. This includes (optional) all-wheel steering with drive chain 6x6x6 and 495/95R25 tires. Fully equipped, including its maximum 12.1-tonne (13.3 US-t) counterweight, the Challenger 3180 also provides the strongest system in the 60-t (66.1 US-t) capacity class, with maximum lifting capacity of 37.9 tonnes (41.7 US t) at 4 meter (13.1-ft) radius. In this configuration, it is still roadable and designed for one-man-operation in countries with 15-tonne(16.5 US-t) axle-load limitations.
