TEREX® CHALLENGER 3160 PROVES ITS VALUE
WITH T. PATER B.V., THE NETHERLANDS
T’Harde, Netherlands, September 7th, 2012 – Founded in 1982 by Teo and Dini Pater as a general crane Rental Company, today family-owned T. Pater b.v. specializes in lifting and transport and jobsite logistics in the construction sector. Seeking to add to its crane fleet with a new crane model that could offer the versatility and low operational cost that its business needed, the company recently invested in the new Terex Challenger 3160, 3-axle, 55-tonne (60.6-US t) capacity class all terrain. The Challenger is the 40th unit of a strong lifting fleet operated by T. Pater, which currently has 5 other Terex crane models in its fleet.
An “A class product” on jobs where time and precision make the difference
Providing the expertise required to help the lifting needs of its customers’ most demanding building projects, T. Pater prides itself in the ability to handle a wide range of lifting tasks where precision and speed really count. “‘We lift –almost- anything’ is our company motto,” says Theo’s son and company manager, Harry. “And the Challenger has proved to fit in very well for us. I personally took part in the customer workshops which led to the development of the Challenger 3160. It’s a great concept, or what I would describe as an A Class product.”
The Challenger 3160 recently demonstrated the versatile strength of its capabilities in completing the precision lifting, positioning and placement of several 2.7-t (2.97-US t) precast concrete flooring sections at 22-m (72-ft) radius within a tight timeline.
“Its long boom gives us the reach we need without a jib, which helps us work faster and safely,” says Harry. “We love the 6.6-tonne (7.3-US t) line pull. When other cranes need triple or quadruple reeving, the Challenger does a great job with just one or two lines. The boom’s -5° incline is important for safety, too, as Meint Jan (the operator) does not need to work at height to reeve the crane.”
Remarking on it low operating cost, “Having two front axles saves wear and tear on tires and brake pads which works out to be economical,” notes Harry. “Due to our strict local road regulations, the under 12-tonne (13.2 US-t) axle load feature is also a must for us here in the Netherlands”
Even at over two meters tall, operators can perform lifts in comfort
Working at the controls, for crane operator Meint Jan Wever, “The Challenger’s hydraulic system management is excellent. Its narrow width and tight turning radius make it easy to maneuver in tight spaces,” says Meint. “Also, for smooth, precision picking and placement I particularly like the joystick-controlled slewing brake feature.”
Besides the crane’s capabilities, for T. Pater’s operators, there is another of the Challenger’s key features that suits them - and Meint in particular: “A lot of thought has been put into the cab layout making for an excellent working environment. I’m 2.05 meters (6.7 feet) tall and still find it comfortable… so if there’s plenty of room for me to stretch my legs, then there’s got to be more than enough room for anyone!”
About the Terex Challenger 3160 all terrain crane
As compact as it is powerful, the Challenger 3160 is the only 3-axle, 55-tonne (60.6 US t) class capacity crane currently available designed for one-man operation. Offering a maximum lifting capacity of 35.6-tonnes (39.2 US-t) at 4-meter (13.1-ft) radius, and equipped with a 50-meter (164-ft), single cylinder telescopic boom, the Challenger 3160 provides self-contained, one-man operation within 12-tonne (13.2 US-t) axle-load limitations. In countries where axle load limits are 10 tonnes (11 US t), the crane can de-rig its own counterweight to reduce weight to less than 30 tonnes (33 US t).
