NEW Terex® CRANE duo fOr Megalift: BREMEN-BASED CRANE COMPANY ACQUIRES AC 40 city And challenger 3160
ZWEIBRÜCKEN, June 26th, 2012 – The people who work at Bremen-based Megalift swear by Terex cranes. In fact, machines from other manufacturers are practically impossible to come by when going through the company’s fleet. Now, the wealth of positive experiences that Megalift has gained with their nine Terex cranes is about to grow further with the acquisition of two new models: a fully-equipped Terex AC 40 City and a Challenger 3160. “Terex is simply the perfect combination of quality, excellent price-performance ratios, and service,” says Megalift general manager Bernd Preuße, as he explains his company’s preference for the crane manufacturer. This is also why Preuße did not miss the opportunity to personally pick up the company’s two new acquisitions together with Jörg Machner, assistant of the management and crane operators Heiko Böschen and Michael Borchers in May.
The new AC 40 City will be the third unit of this model in Megalift’s fleet. “The AC 40 City is a marvel of engineering: compact, powerful, and absolutely reliable – it is simply unbeatable in its category,” says Preuße when explaining the reasons for the purchase decision. Not surprisingly, the crane’s compact dimensions are one of the main reasons why Megalift uses it primarily for indoor projects at factories, e.g., when relocating machinery.
As for the Challenger, the crane’s ideal axle loads were a strong selling pointfor Megalift: “Our authorities are very, very picky with axle loads, and the Challenger lets us rest assured knowing that we don’t have to worry about a thing – its axle loads are optimally balanced, and with a width of just 2.55 meters, it is very easy to use in urban downtown projects,” explains Michael Borchers, who also finds the crane’s technical characteristics highly compelling. The unit’s large lifting capacity while telescoping, together with its strong hoisting rope, make it an ideal machine for assignments in which large loads are involved. Moreover, its compact design, when combined with a runner, makes it perfect for indoor applications.
Both operators are already looking forward to their first assignments with the new Terex cranes – especially Heiko Böschen, who has only been working at Megalift for eight months and has now gotten his “own” new crane with the AC 40 City. “That’s our company philosophy: Each operator has their own crane. However, the fact that we use Terex cranes almost exclusively means that our employees are able to quickly learn the ropes when switching models, which gives us an enormous amount of flexibility when, for example, vacation time comes around,” explains Preuße. Accordingly, providing his customers with this amount of flexibility also means he has to be able to rely on his crane suppliers to do the same for his company: “That’s one of the things we really like about Terex’s customer service: We can reach a service technician at any time – they won’t leave us hanging even if it’s a late Friday afternoon!”
The Terex® Challenger 3160
The powerful and compact Terex Challenger 3160 is currently the only three-axle crane with a 55-tonne lifting capacity designed with one-person operation in mind. With a 50-m single-cylinder telescopic boom and a maximum lifting capacity of 35.6 tonnes when working with a reach of four meters, the Terex Challenger 3160 can be operated independently by a single person while remaining under an axle load limit of 12 tonnes (for countries with a maximum axle load limit of 10 tonnes, the crane can set down its own counterweight, keeping the unit’s total service weight under 30 tonnes).
The Terex® AC 40 City
As the most compact unit with a 40-tonne lifting capacity from the City Crane series, the Terex® AC 40 City is particularly well-suited for operations that have to be performed in constrained spaces: its overall height makes it possible to work with clearance heights as small as 2.99 meters, while a total length of only 8.57 meters and a carrier length of 7.34 meters provide a high level of maneuverability even under the tightest conditions.
The crane’s maneuverability is further enhanced by its three-axle independent rear-axle steering. In addition, the fact that the crane is allowed to travel on public roads with its maximum system length of 44.2 meters is of particular advantage.
The telescopic main boom’s length ranges from 7.80 to 31.2 meters, while the four boom head sheaves are designed for maximum loads of up to 34.4 tonnes. A heavy-lift attachment with an additional sheave, which makes it possible to achieve a maximum lifting capacity of 40 tonnes, is one of the many options available for the unit. Other available options include 7.1-m and 13-m main boom extensions with a folding jib/double fly jib, as well as a three-sheave, 1.2-meter-long assembly jib designed for loads of up to 15 tonnes. Finally, the crane’s standard counterweight weighs 5.45 tonnes.
