TEREX PLAYS An up lifting ROLE IN one of milans major real estate projects
Milan, Italy, May 25th, 2012 – Five Terex® tower cranes (four Terex CTT181B-8 TS 21 models and one Terex CTT331-16 TS23 model) have been working for nearly two years on the construction of two residential towers as part of a large restructuring and re-design of Porta Nuova – Isola District in Milan, Italy.
Boasting an area of 340,000 square meters, the new Porta Nuova urban development is not only one of the most important real estate developments in Italy, but also among the most significant in Europe in terms of architectural quality and size. Once built, Porta Nuova will provide Milan with over 110,000 square meters of office and residential space, 160,000 square meters designated for pedestrian use and approximately 20,000 square meters for cultural events. The two towers have prompted interest from the trade press right from the design phase, because they feature jutting terraces that will accommodate 480 medium and large-sized trees, 250 small trees, 11,000 perennials and ground cover plants and 5,000 shrubs - in other words, a quantity of plants and trees that corresponds to 10,000 square meters of woods.
This enormous real estate development was designed by a group of highly acclaimed international architects and is being constructed by several well-known Italian contractors. One of them is ZH GCC SpA from Campo Tures, outside Bolzano, which has made a name for itself for delivering quality and maintaining high safety standards. To build the two residential towers, 16 and 23 stories (80 and 106 meters) high, ZH GCC chose five Terex tower cranes:
1) CTT181B-8 Jib = 45 m, Height = 133 m, Tower: TS21, on concrete foundation
2) CTT181B-8 Jib = 30 m, Height = 103 m, Tower: TS21, on concrete foundation
3) CTT181B-8 Jib = 30 m, Height = 51 m, Tower: TS21, on undercarriage 4.5 m x 4.5 m
4) CTT331-16 Jib = 60 m, Height = 140 m, Tower: TS23, on concrete foundation
5) CTT181B-8 Jib = 40 m, Height = 47 m, Tower: TS21, on concrete foundation
The tower cranes positioning and layout was studied in cooperation with the ZH GCC since an early stages of the project. The goal was to provide maximum jobsite coverage while maintaining operational efficiency.
The choice to use Terex tower cranes proved to be right, both in terms of productivity and for work site logistics. As stated by the CEO of ZH GCC, Werner Zimmerhofer, “Terex provided the best solutions, as the CTT 331 stands out for the operating speed and has an 8-tonne capacity; whereas the CT 181s are easy to operate and in my opinion are the most reliable in their category. Terex proved to be the right choice also for their support even before the work began, understanding the project and taking care of assembly, thanks to a team of expert fitters who provided all necessary logistical support. Terex also allowed us to operate in complete safety, an important aspect for our company and a key element of this project ".
Two of the CTT181B-8 Tower Cranes were custom fitted with a shorter jib of 30 meters. The CTT331-16 represented the biggest challenge. The crane was installed inside a stairs shaft of a garage, as a consequence of this, the crane was far from the buildings. And when the project was in the final phase and the crane was climbed to a height where tie bars were needed, struts of 14 meters of length had to be used.
Due to the height difference between buildings, when the two towers were almost completed, the CTT331 had to be climbed to a final 140m height to serve both. As there was no possibility to tie the crane at this height, ZH GCC and Terex application engineering team came up with a solution, a guyed collar section tied to both buildings.
The cranes have been in operation for almost 3 years, the building is expected to be completed at mid 2012.
About the Terex® CTT 331 flat top tower crane
Designed for use in confined areas, near airports or in conjunction with other flat top cranes, the CTT 331 is well-suited for heavy lifting and placement duties in the most challenging applications. Offering efficient set-up times to get working quickly, the CTT 331 is also an ideal partner for transferring heavy materials around the jobsite. It features a 75-meter jib offering, a jib tip capacity of 2.9 tonnes and maximum lifting capacity of 16 tonnes. The maximum free-standing height is 92.6 meters.
The Terex flat top tower crane range includes a series of 26 models providing lifting capacities from 50 to 720 mt.
