lightweight and compact Terex® ac 100/4l
used for construction site PROJECT
Berlin, Germany, January 25th, 2012 – In order to help build a new residential complex for Kondor Wessels GmbH at Berlin-Mitte, the people in charge of GAAC Commerz GmbH Mittenwalde’s “Spedition & Transport” Division decided to use a Terex® AC 100/4L all terrain crane. Performing approximately 20 lifts, the crane provided the construction workers at the site with the crushed stone and concrete they required at dizzying heights.
With each concrete bucket weighing a mere 2.5 tonnes (2.75 U.S. tons), it is true that crane service provider GAAC was not faced with a daunting task in terms of the loads that had to be lifted at the Berlin-Mitte site. However, this fails to account for the series of unique challenges that characterized the project. For instance, the construction site was located right in the middle of the city which meant that the space available would be extremely tight. Also, the crane would have to be placed on top of an underground parking lot. These two factors meant that the crane used would have to be as compact and lightweight as possible. “That’s why we decided on the four-axle Terex AC 100/4L, which was simply ideal in terms of its design and performance characteristics,” explains Carsten Herfurth, who is part of GAAC’s technical field staff and was in charge of the project.
In order to distribute the all-terrain crane’s outrigger pressure across as large an area as possible, the GAAC team placed large reinforced concrete plates under the crane’s outriggers, making it possible to reduce the load exerted on the underground parking lot to an acceptable level. For the lifts, the Terex AC 100/4L showed up with its standard equipment and its 59.4-meter (194.9 ft.) long telescopic main boom. “We were able to get the required reach of 42 meters (137.8 ft.) by fully telescoping the crane’s boom without an extension and using a ballast of 26.1 tonnes (28.8 U.S. tons),” reports Carsten Herfurth, who considered this to be the Terex crane’s decisive advantage for the job. To be equipped with an almost 60 meter (197 ft.) main boom was crucial to the project. In addition, the crane was designed as a four-axle machine despite its boom length, meaning that it combines a long main boom length with outstanding maneuverability and a comparatively small weight. “This has often made the Terex AC 100/4L our first choice for many projects in Berlin and the surrounding areas, especially thanks to the fact that it features standard truck dimensions which allow us to travel on public roads at any time of the day,” points out Carsten Herfurth.
About the Terex® AC 100/4L
The compact Terex AC 100/4L all terrain crane is the only crane in the 100 tonnes capacity class to feature a standard truck width of 2.55 meters, even when equipped with large 445/95R25 tires. With a telescopic main boom of 59.4 meters and the 10-meter section of its 19-meter-long double folding jib, the crane also features one of the longest system lengths (69.5 meters) that can travel on four axles while complying with a 12-tonne axle load limit. Meanwhile, the crane reaches its maximum system length of 81.7 meters together with an extension system characterized by a high level of versatility: The 19-meter-long double folding jib can be mounted directly on the telescopic boom or on an additional 8-meter extension installed between the telescopic boom and the double folding jib, enabling fast setup times at construction sites.
It is possible to offset either the 19-meter double folding jib on the extension or the entire 27 meters (the 19-meter double jib plus the 8-meter extension) on the telescopic boom. This makes it possible to either work with a large working radius or overcome projecting edges of up to 63 meters.
A powerful 335-kW (445 hp) engine is responsible for the AC 100/4L’s cost-effective operation, exceptional road-traveling performance, and outstanding fuel economy.
