NINE TEREX® TOWER CRANES AT WORK

ON CHALLENGING “PORTOPICCOLO” RESORT PROJECT, ITALY

Zweibruecken, 25th October 2011 – Since January this year, nine Terex® tower cranes have been working for Rizzani de Eccher, one of Italy’s leading construction companies, on the construction of the new Portopiccolo residential and leisure resort in Sistiana Bay, near Triest. Careful preparation and planning were all part of the challenges of an escarped, sea-facing jobsite location.

Working towards a December 2013 completion schedule, the nine Terex tower cranes include three Terex® CTT 181B-8, three Terex®  CTT 161A-8, and three earlier GTS models.

A project with local economic impact

Located on one of the most picturesque sites on the Adriatic coast, the Portopiccolo-Sistiana project represents one of the region’s most significant investments in the tourism sector over recent years. Currently providing employment to approximately 150 construction workers, the new development is part of a wider project that is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s local economic growth. The resort itself, once completed, will initially offer a further 230 jobs.

“…Set-up was fast and easy despite the challenges…”

For the Rizzani de Eccher team, high wind speeds, a rocky cliff-side location, and the implications of using nine crane units in close quarters were all part of a challenging planning process.

Backing onto the mountains and stretching directly down to the sea, the site itself is located on a steep escarpment. Consequently, several weeks in advance, the ground had to be cleared of trees, shrubs and rocks. Once freed from obstacles, the entire worksite was then leveled into terraces and stabilized before each crane could be anchored individually onto its heavy reinforced concrete base. Careful preparation was also required in defining the position of each crane prior to erection, to account for wind speeds and avoid collisions at working heights ranging from 25 to 45 meters. However, as Carlo Rugo, Construction Manager, Rizzani de Eccher explains, “Despite the difficult environment and jobsite planning, the cranes themselves were easy and fast to set-up.”

During their three-year mission, the nine cranes will be lifting a substantial portion of the 120, 000 m2 of concrete and 10, 500 tonnes of iron needed to complete the project. “Since the beginning of the year the cranes have been working virtually every day, at a reliable, steady pace,” says Carlo. “We’re making good progress and the cranes are doing a great job.”

The project was awarded to Rizzani de Eccher by the real estate division of Serenissima SGR Spa, on the behalf of the Rilke Fund, under the General Management of Valdadige Costruzioni SpA., Verona.

Designed on a human scale and focusing on quality in the long-term, the exclusive 35-hectacre facility will include 490 apartments and sea-front villas, a five-star hotel, plus other hotel accommodation, 25 shops, 11 restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, 9,600 m2 of beach, a 100-berth marina, a wellness center and spa, and 1, 220 underground parking lots. Much of the building will use quarried stone to blend into the surrounding landscape. Imagined by construction designer Francis Luparelli, assisted by architect Andreas Kipar, the sea actually runs beneath part of the property overlooking the marina. Designed to preserve the charm of the resort’s natural environment, an ambitious energy-saving target using renewable thermal power is also part of the project.
