TANDEM LIFT WITH MAXIMUM REACH AND LOAD PERFORMED
WITH A Terex® AC 100/4L AT Berlin-spandau
ZWEIBRÜCKEN, September 29th, 2011 – GAAC Commerz GmbH Mittenwalde’s “Spedition & Transport” Division recently relied on a Terex® AC 100/4L in order to remove two butane tanks that were no longer fit for use on behalf of Ludwigsfelde-based Gasanlagenbau Petzold GmbH. Together with a second crane, the AC 100/4L performed a tandem lift with utmost precision in order to move the two gigantic tanks from the plant facilities at Berlin-Spandau to a neighboring dock.
At a width of 28 meters, the two butane tanks towered next to each other over the premises at Berlin-Spandau until March 30th, 2011 when they were removed and lifted to the neighboring port facilities by crane so that they could be dismantled. “Due to the sheer magnitude of the loads and the surrounding conditions, there was no way to perform the project without a tandem lift,” explains Carsten Herfurth, who is part of GAAC’s technical field staff and was in charge of the project. When calculating the required reach with the load that would be lifted, the load table used showed that the Terex AC 100/4L was the perfect machine for the job: working with a reach of 15 meters and a counterweight of 26.1 tonnes, the Terex crane would be able to provide the exact lifting capacity of 15 tonnes (including the hook block and rigging gear) that would be needed. In other words, the Terex crane would be lifting its maximum possible load at this reach during the project.
“The tandem lift itself went off without a hitch,” points out Herfurth. First, the butane tanks, which had already been released from their anchor points, were lifted from the ground, and then the two cranes “grabbed them with their hooks” from their ends. The tandem lift required utmost precision, since every single one of the two cranes’ horizontal and vertical movements had to be perfectly synchronized. Carsten Herfurth gave the crane operators the required instructions via radio, and they in turn carried out every single one of them perfectly, thus ensuring that the tandem lift would be successfully completed on schedule within a single day.
Terex AC 100/4L allowed to travel on public roads without restrictions
Another crucial advantage behind the Terex AC 100/4L played an important role for the crane service provider when it came to the project at Berlin-Spandau: with its four axles, the machine has standard truck dimensions despite the fact that it is a crane with a lifting capacity of 100 tonnes. “This means that there are no restrictions in terms of when the crane is allowed to travel through Berlin and its surroundings. In other words, we can take the AC 100/4L on public roads at any time, which is not the case with the usual type of five-axle machine that has this kind of lifting capacity,” explains Carsten Herfurth. Naturally, this is a great boon to crane service providers in terms of the flexibility they can offer —especially in large cities and metropolitan areas.
About the Terex® AC 100/4L
The compact Terex AC 100/4L is the only crane with a lifting capacity of 100 tonnes to feature a standard truck width of 2.55 meters, even when equipped with large 445/95R25 tires. With a telescopic main boom of 59.4 meters and the 10-meter section of its 19-meter-long double folding jib, the crane also features one of the longest system lengths (69.5 meters) that can travel on four axles while complying with a 12-tonne axle load limit. Meanwhile, the crane reaches its maximum system length of 81.7 meters together with an extension system characterized by a high level of versatility: The 19-meter-long double folding jib can be mounted directly on the telescopic boom or on an additional 8-meter extension installed between the telescopic boom and the double folding jib, enabling fast setup times at construction sites.
It is to be pointed out that it is possible to offset either the 19-meter double folding jib on the extension or the entire 27 meters (the 19-meter double jib plus the 8-meter extension) on the telescopic boom. This makes it possible to either work with a large working radius or overcome projecting edges of up to 63 meters.
A powerful 335-kW (445 hp) engine is responsible for the AC 100/4L’s cost-effective operation, exceptional road-traveling performance, and outstanding fuel economy.
About GAAC Commerz GmbH, “Spedition & Transport” Division
Mittenwalde-based (near Berlin) GAAC Commerz GmbH’s “Spedition & Transport” Division is in charge of one of the company’s three main business areas. This business area, in turn, is subdivided into four fields of activity, one of which focuses on a range of services revolving around the concept of “mobile cranes with crane rentals.”
GAAC GmbH’s fleet comprises mobile cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 30 to 100 tonnes, but the company can also procure larger crane models and heavy-goods vehicles, and offers escort vehicle services for heavy goods vehicles as well. GAAC GmbH uses its mobile cranes for a wide variety of assembly and erection operations at construction sites, and attaches great importance to providing its customers with expert comprehensive advice at all times: Before a project is performed, GAAC’s technical field staff performs site inspections and provides customers with expert advice in order to ensure that each individual project is performed on schedule and in a cost-effective manner with the best solution possible.
