THREE TEREX® TFC45LX REACH STACKERS HANDLE THE HEAT
FOR TUBE CITY IMS L.L.C. IN DUNKIRK, FRANCE
Zweibruecken, June 21st, 2011 – Terex Cranes has delivered three specially tailored TFC45LX reach stackers to be used in hot steel handling at an Arcelor-Mittal steel mill in Dunkirk, France. They are owned and operated by Tube City IMS LLC as part of an equipment handling contract with Arcelor-Mittal.
The decision to replace the existing steel handlers left on-site by the previous service provider with new machines specially adapted to the tough steel production environment, presented a challenge to the Terex Cranes and Tube City IMS teams who were faced with a tight delivery deadline.
Three months to deliver the best that today’s technology can provide
“What we really needed were new machines, specially equipped with the best that today’s technology can provide, but they had to be delivered by January to suit the imperatives of our new Dunkirk contract,” says Jean-Luc Koclejda, Vice President New Technology Tube City IMS.
With twenty years experience, Terex Cranes is well-skilled in providing solutions for industrial steel-handling applications. The company has been producing its TFC45LX (without stabilizer) and TFC45LSX (with super advanced stabilizer) reach stackers that are designed for hot steel handling since 2002.
The Terex® TFC45LX revolutionizes the hot steel handling process
Quite different from the reach stackers equipped with grabs and electromagnets used in port terminals, industrial steel stackers have higher capacities and are far more robust to sustain heavy loads, uneven surfaces and temperatures up to 600°C.
“With just three months to complete the project, our customer’s clear insight, close collaboration and confidence in the expertise and experience of our Montceau-les-Mines team helped us make progress rapidly. Our stock of pre-welded components, that we maintain to cater for urgent deliveries, also proved to be a great time-saver on this project,” says Manuel Teixeira, Stacker Design Manager, Terex Cranes, Montceau-les-Mines. “The result is gratifying, and we are proud to say that these machines have revolutionized the entire hot steel handling process.”
Designed for intensive performance, flexibility and safety
Capable of lifting and handling heavy 40-tonne steel slabs from any angle, the Terex TFC45LX is significantly more flexible to operate than other handling machines. From its new boom design, hydraulic system, tires and cab, to the security of operators circulating around the machine, every aspect of the TFC45LX is specially protected and reinforced to provide comfort and safety. All three steel handlers delivered to the Dunkirk site are fully equipped with remote telecommunications satellite controls and WIFI linked to Arcelor Mittal’s close position operation management station, which is capable of locating the machines’ position to the meter. The communication system’s antennae and cables were fitted and tested on-site by the Terex team.
“The TFC45LX has radically improved our job. Our experienced operators coped with the transition to the new machines smoothly and there’s no looking back,“ says Jean-Luc Koklejda.
Delivered within the strict “just-in-time” January schedule, the TFC45LX hot steel handlers have been working around-the-clock, seven days a week.
“The new machines are performing well and the Terex Cranes team is giving us great service,” says Jean-Luc Koclejda.
About the Terex TFC45LX industrial reach stacker
Specially designed for hot steel applications, and with the flexibility and capacity to handle heavy 40-tonne steel slabs from various angles, the Terex TFC45LX features a reinforced boom designed to carry suspended high-temperature loads at safe distance from tires. Equipped with a multi-tool spreader for hydraulic and mechanical slave tong attachments, the boom is comprised of mechanically-welded, reinforced, high-limit steel to sustain heavy-handling requirements. Its components are standard for simple, cost-effective maintenance. The chassis and axle-base are specially reinforced for intensive, heavy work on uneven terrain. A heat-proof mobile cab, fitted with lateral protections, 22-mm reinforced windscreen and emergency evacuation ladder provides operational comfort and safety. The Terex TFC45LX reach stacker is designed in conformity with the latest EN15000 industrial safety standards.
