TEREX® CC 2800-1 AND CC 2500-1 RELOCATE BUNKER IN TANDEM LIFT

Witramowo, Poland, 07th June 2011 – Two Terex® lattice boom crawler cranes, one Terex® CC 2800-1 and one Terex® CC 2500-1, have relocated a historical bunker for the re-construction of the S7 Warsaw-Gdansk highway, through the village of Witramowo, in Poland.

Performed by Gastel Żurawie S.A., Poland, the lift of the 464-tonne concrete bunker became necessary when a local conservation official refused the dismantling of the shelter. Originally built as part of a larger military fortification, the bunker is considered to be one of the best preserved examples of its kind in the country.

As a particularly unique application, this lift required careful planning and the use of heavy-lifting cranes capable of operating to the high level of precision required to move the bunker to its final destination. We needed a solution that would enable us to lift, carry and rotate the entire structure extremely carefully in a single journey, without deteriorating the bunker’s existing fragile condition,” says Tomasz Kwieciński, Vice President of Gastel Żurawie S.A.

Part of the solution was a giant steel cage designed to encase the bunker while being strong enough to take the full tension of both cranes without buckling during the lifting process.

Rapidly assembled in SSL configuration with 42-metre main booms, both cranes were fully rigged and ready to operate within three days.

For our customer, Sando Budownictwo Polska Sp. z o.o. our recommendation to operate with a Terex® CC 2800-1 and Terex® CC 2500-1 crawler crane tandem on this job had major advantages. The cranes’ combination of huge lifting capacity and maneuverability meant that we were able to lift the full 530-tonne load, carry it under hook for approximately 70 meters, and then carefully rotate the cranes to orientate the structure into its precise final position in one step. Any other solution would have either involved ordering more expensive, heavier cranes, or dividing the process into several separate stages, which would have taken much longer,” says Jacek Mogiłka, Crawler Crane Division Manager of Gastel Żurawie S.A.

Beginning at 8 a.m., the specially constructed steel frame was attached to the double hook blocks of both cranes in order to lift the bunker to a height of approximately 1.5 meters above ground. Both cranes then proceeded to lift, carry and slew the load together slowly for four hours, before setting the bunker at its final destination.

While considerably increasing lifting speeds, double hook operation also helped reduce winch reeving time and enabled the use of shorter hoist ropes to reduce the weight carried by each machine. Offering greater horizontality than single hook operation, weight on the line pull was sufficiently well-distributed to slew and carry the 530-tonne load without twisting the hoist ropes. The Terex® CC 2800-1 and Terex® CC 2500-1 successfully completed their tandem lift within six hours.

“Our choice of using the Terex CC 2800-1 and CC 2500-1 crawler cranes to work together on this unique jobsite provided the efficient, cost-effective solution that our customer needed. Consequently, we were able to ensure that the entire process was carried out smoothly, according to schedule within just one day. The provision of the second double hook block by Terex Cranes Zweibrücken also came as a welcome advantage in ensuring our customer’s full satisfaction,” says Kwieciński.

Currently located at a safe distance from the highway, one of Poland’s best preserved examples of historic military fortification now looks forward to restoration, and being opened to the public as an historical monument in the months to come. The overall cost of relocating the monument was lower than modifying the highway to go round it.

About the Terex® CC 2500-1

The Terex® CC 2500-1 is the most powerful lattice boom crawler crane in its class. Providing a maximum lifting capacity of 500 tonnes and maximum load moment of 6140 meter tonnes, the CC 2500-1 offers a maximum load radius of 142 meters with SSL/LSL 126 m + 36 m LF. The CC 2500-1 stands out for its heavy load capacity and high versatility, notably when operated in Superlift configuration. Variable Superlift radius and variable offset for SW and SWSL boom combinations are well-matched to a wide range of applications. Main boom length reaches up to 126 metres, depending on crane model. Machine weight is optimized for transport, at a maximum of 39 tonnes per section. The user-friendly IC-1 touch-screen crane control system provides exceptionally simple and precise operation, capable of calculating load capacities for intermediate main boom positions, among other features.

About the Terex® CC2800-1

The Terex® CC 2800-1 lattice boom crawler crane can be converted from standard version to special-purpose wind power crane - and back, with only a few special components. Like extra-strong main boom sections and a fixed fly jib (LF2) in 12, 24 or 36-meter lengths developed specifically for wind turbine erection. Standard available wind-power combinations provide optimum lifting capacities and clearance while minimizing transportation costs. Available in both standard and narrow-track (NT) models, the NT version enables access to road and track ways from 5 meters in width. The NT version is compatible with 1.5 meter track pads (for reduced ground pressure). Additionally, the CC2800-1 can also be supplied with a chassis designed for road travel. The standard machine, including all winches and A-frame, is transportable within a 12-tonne axle load limit. With design features and options that focus on time-saving setup and disassembly processes - plus reduced transportation costs, the CC2800-1 provides the benefits of being both highly flexible and cost-effective to operate. Equipped with the time-proven Terex IC-1 control system, this machine is simple, precise and comfortable to operate in almost any working conditions.
