Terex® crane assists Tunnel boring project in Düsseldorf

ZWEIBRÜCKEN, April 29, 2011 – With the help of a Terex® CC2500-1 lattice boom crawler crane, Riga Baumann GmbH & Co. KG placed a tunnel boring machine, complete with cutter head, into the ground in the city centre of Düsseldorf, Germany. During preparatory works in the Königsallee to expand Düsseldorf’s “Wehrhahn” underground metro line, two challenges had to be overcome. First, some 60 lifts had to take place under the most severely confined site conditions; and second, an extremely tight schedule had to be maintained.

Above all, lowering the 130 tonne, 9.5 metre-diameter cutter head demanded great precision. “We had to position the load precisely, so that the technicians in the construction pit could mount the cutter head at the front of the 65 metre-long tunnel boring machine. To allow us to work within the available 12 metre radius, we rigged the Terex® CC 2500-1 with a

54 metre SH main boom, Superlift configuration and 100 tonnes of Superlift ballast,” explained crane driver Tim Langer. This was the best crane configuration for the tasks at hand. A second crane for support was only required during part of the lifts, as components had to be turned without touching the ground.

Site operating conditions proved to be a particular challenge. The Riga Baumann team were not only confronted by the physical constraints of Düsseldorf‘s Königsallee, but also by an extremely tight schedule: the crane had to be assembled and dismantled overnight, between the hours of 9 pm and 5 am.

“The compact design of the CC 2500-1 helped as it is designed for rapid crane assembly and dismantling. One of the main reasons for choosing the Terex® CC 2500-1 for this project was that space limitations ruled out using a mobile crane,” pointed out Project Manager Uwe Langer.

To get the tunnel boring machine ready on time, the Riga Baumann team had to work round the clock for two weeks, and were entirely dependent on the reliability of the equipment they used. Man and machine worked so well together that the team were able to complete the mission five hours ahead of schedule.

The Terex® CC 2500-1

The Terex® CC 2500-1 is the most powerful lattice boom crawler crane in its class. It has a maximum lifting capacity of 500 tonnes. Maximum load moment amounts to 6140 metre tonnes, and the maximum load radius is 146 metres with SSL/LSL 126 m + 36 m LF. The CC 2500-1 stands out by virtue of its enormous load capacity and great flexibility, especially in Superlift configuration. Variable Superlift radius and variable offset for SW and SWSL boom combinations allow operation in an extended range of applications. Main boom length is up to 126 metres, dependent on the model selected. Weight has been optimised for transport, at a maximum of 39 tonnes per section.

The user-friendly IC-1 touchscreen crane control system is designed for simple and safe operation, for example it can calculate load capacities for intermediate main boom positions.
