  Terex® AC 55 city And AC 100/4 REPLACE TRUCK SCALES

IN TANDEM LIFT OPERATION

 

ZWEIBRÜCKEN, 6th August 2010 – With the help of two Terex® cranes, the Kran Saller team was able to easily handle a challenging task in the Bavarian town of Passau: two gigantic truck scales, each weighing 43 metric tons (47 US tons), had to be replaced at a waste management company’s facilities.

 

The most difficult part of this job was a tandem lift that had to be partially performed under a projecting roof with a height of only 5m (16 feet), making the assignment even more difficult. In addition, the area immediately surrounding the truck scales had a maximum width of approximately 4m (13 feet), resulting in extremely tight working conditions.

 

Every crane operator knows tandem lifts are always challenging. After all, they require two cranes to be controlled in a coordinated manner. Due to the difficult conditions at the site, the team decided to rely on two cranes manufactured by Terex – more specifically, the Terex® AC 55 City and the Terex® AC 100/4. The Terex® AC 55 City in particular proved ideal for the task, as its flexibility and compact design come with an extraordinarily low center of gravity that enables the unit to generate powerful lifting forces under any operating conditions.

 

The Terex® AC 55 City was in charge of lifting the truck scales approximately 1 meter [3 feet] from the floor while in a laterally offset position. The challenge? The crane boom had to be telescoped while under load. “That’s the crucial advantage of the Terex® AC 55 City: it can do this even at a flat boom angle, which was exactly what we needed for this particular assignment,” explains crane operator Benjamin Bretzendorfer. Meanwhile, the Terex® AC 100/4 was in a much more favorable position. It was able to work on the opposite side, perfectly aligned with the scale, in order to lift the heavy weight in tandem with the Terex® AC 55 City. However, the lack of space meant that it could only use half of its support base for this purpose.

 

Once the truck scales were lifted off the floor, they were swung out to the side underneath the projecting roof and were then lifted again so that a semi-trailer could be moved under them in order to remove them from the premises. The end result? The Terex® crane duo made it possible for the Saller Team to quickly and safely replace the two truck scales to the satisfaction of the customer, who was able to keep production downtimes to a minimum thanks to the team’s efficiency.

The Terex® AC 100/4

With a lifting capacity of 100 metric tons [120 US tons] and a maximum load moment of 308 mt, the Terex® AC 100/4 is the most powerful four-axle crane in the world. Its five-section telescopic boom provides for a system length of up 50 meters [164 feet], which can be further extended to 77 meters [252 feet] with a main boom extension. More importantly, perhaps, the main boom’s extension system sets new standards in terms of variability: the unit’s main boom extension can be offset on either the main boom or on the 8-meter [26-foot] extension. Finally, a width of only 2.55 meters [8.37 feet], a total length of 34.1 feet [10.4 meters], and four steerable axles make the Terex® AC 100/4 an ideally flexible machine capable of dealing with all types of assignments.

 

During the crane’s development phase, cost-effective operation was just as much of a priority as sheer performance, and was achieved with state-of-the-art Daimler technology (among other things). More specifically with a 455-PS [448-hp] engine responsible for travel and a 175-PS [172-hp] motor for the crane.

 

The Terex® AC 55 City

The all-terrain Terex® AC 55 City crane, with a maximum lifting capacity of 55 metric tons [60.5 US tons], is characterized by a number of outstanding features, not least of which is a system length of 54 meters [177 feet]. In fact, a total length of 60 meters [196 feet] can be reached with the optional connector for the main boom extension.

 

This achievement is all the more remarkable when taking into account the vehicle’s total length – a mere 9 meters [29 feet]. The unit’s compact dimensions provide for extraordinary flexibility when working in constrained spaces, as well as for exceptional off-road maneuverability. A 321-hp Daimler engine functions as the crane’s drive, allowing for a maximum road speed of 85 km/h [53 mph] while ensuring cost-effective operation characteristics.
