TOUGH JOBS ON FLOATING DOCK FOR Terex® TOWER CRANES
Zweibrücken, Germany, December 10, 2009 – Terex Cranes has installed two Terex® CTL 140-10 TS21 tower cranes on a floating dock in the harbour of Ølen, near Haugesund, Norway. The cranes are customized for the specialized requirements of Norwegian offshore and maritime service facilities provider Westcon.
“When we first approached the Nordic Terex Cranes distribution center in December 2008, we were facing a challenging situation,” Westcon Operation Manager Arne Matre said. “The old cranes had to be replaced, and the new cranes had to adapt to an existing quay portal set-up consisting of a floating dock and travelling unit equipped with rails at two different heights.”
This unusual project turned out to be a welcome assignment for the experienced Terex engineers. The international team took on the challenge and developed a made-to-order crane concept in record time. “Our goal was to deliver a highly productive tower crane solution to Westcon – a reliable crane that gets its job done safely in this very tough environment and constrained dockside setting”, said Francesco Valente, Application Engineering Manager at Terex Cranes in Fontanafredda, Italy. “Our solution includes two Terex® CTL 140 cranes with a maximum lifting capacity of 10 tonnes each. Both are equipped with legs of different lengths so that they fit perfectly to the existing floating dock.”
The cranes were delivered to Ølen on August 11 and were fully operational by August 24. Arne Matre adds: “With the two CTL 140 cranes we more than doubled our lifting capacity and work radii at the dock. We will realize enormous savings in crane hours and know that the Nordic Terex Cranes team in Helsingborg, Sweden is only a few hours away to support us if needed. We are very satisfied with the great expertise and extremely short turnaround time between contract and delivery for such a specific request.”
The Terex® CTL 140
With a 1.6 to 2.1 meter tower, 30 to 50 meter jib length and 8 to 10-tonne maximum load capacity, the Terex® CTL 140 TS luffing jib tower crane is an excellent solution for locations requiring compact design, adaptability and high load capacity. It is well suited to sites allowing little room for slewing motions – a special advantage in terms of security for urban use or work on cramped, high-rise sites. The integrated AFC system promotes quick work cycles and easy handling.
